Earl Van Best became a suspect from an investigation started by his son whom he abandoned at an early age. His son began researching only to discover that his father lived in the California area at the same time as the Zodiac murderer was perpetrating murder. Best looked like an exact replica of the police sketch, therefore he was an immediate suspect.

He died unexpectedly & was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave in the poorest part of the poorest neighborhood in Mexico City [per his son and Mexican records]. USA Social Security Record gives death date as 14 Aug 1984 but that may be when the American government received the Mexican death record.
